Independence day and Republic day are days of introspection
Dalip Singh Wasan, Advocate.

We, the people of India must realize that Independence Day and the day on which we adopted democracy are not the days for rejoicing, but these days are when we should conduct a thorough introspection and we must try to understand as to why we could not solve those problems which were available with us when we were slaves. We had been poor, we had been unemployed, we had been living in huts and in mud houses and there are people who are still lying under the open skies, there are people who were starving, there were people who remained beggars and could not rise, there were people who had been wearing on rags, there were people who were ill, but they were not having proper treatment, there were people who had no security in old age or when they were ill or unable to earn. We had been paying bribes and we had been facing rising prices. There people who had been dividing us on the basis of religions, castes and on the basis of sex and that had been the reason we could not become a nation. And they could divide us into India and Pakistan in 1947. We had been facing all these problems and now time has come when we should sit and examine our position. If we conduct a survey and an introspection, we shall come to the conclusion that all these problems which were there during the time of our slavery are still with us and in spite of all assurances, we could not solve these problems.

We must conduct survey and introspection and then on these days we should make plans for our future. We should not rejoice on these days because we have failed on all the fronts and it is on record that one set of people are growing rich and the other part is being reduced to more poverty. This is not good. We must be sorry to note that in spite of all our assurances, the people are still illiterate, unemployed and poor and till we give proper education to all and till all are adjusted at proper work from where they draw proper income for running the family administration, we cannot claim that we are an independent country and we have attained the status of a democracy. Merely writing this world in our constitution shall not serve us. We shall have to have a look on our people and we must try to raise their standard. They must be given proper education, proper training, proper work, proper earning power, proper accommodation to live and only then we shall be able to say that we have given something to our people. Merely calling them for casting their votes to the people who are totally strangers and who are not their well wishers is not a democracy. The time is far away when the people shall be electing their own people and till that date we must make it sure that competent people must be nominated for the houses and only competent people should be given ministry portfolio because they are to control highly qualified people. We must know that till we are giving incompetent people as ministers, we shall be living in a bureaucracy and not in a democracy. So these are some problems which need immediate examination and immediate remedy. It seems we never utilized these days of independence and Republic Day for introspection. That had been a biggest mistake with us. From the next Republic Day falling on 26th January, 2008, we shall adopt this new way and we shall conduct an introspection and we shall not enjoy this day. There is nothing with us which can make us happy. We had been committing mistakes and we had been making life of our people a Hell. Some people are seen saying that the days of slavery were better. We must make these people to say that this independence and this republic are the best achievements.
