If you are selecting your next ERP package, then this small article may be worth to read, especially if you are researching Microsoft Business Solutions Dynamics GP MRP option. Here we would like to share our experience and clients FAQ and concerns. We are certified GP VAR, so this article is my personal opinion, when I separate my point of view from Microsoft Dynamics subdivision and folks in Fargo

1. Technology edge compliance. Dynamics GP historically is Great Plains Dexterity MRP application, and Dex in turn was built on DB and OS graphical platform independence principles, back in earlier 1990th and as the result Dex was written in C++ programming language to address DB and OS independence. Dex is so far GP integrated development environment and Dynamics.dic is Dex dictionary, understanding sanscript scripting language. Microsoft is pushing hard to integrate GP with Microsoft Office stack, but is it really critical and if you are GP customer – do you really care about reading hour email from GP directly, or you would prefer opening Microsoft Outlook email instead?

2. Dexterity drawbacks. Yes, of course if Dex fits to several OS platforms, then you should expect that it will not provide “standard” MS Windows features, such as enabling edit field fold in to the next line in GP ReportWriter. This is just one of the multiple examples, but it gives you the things to think about. If you trust C programming language to resolve all the problems, you may be tolerant to the fact, that Microsoft has its own project: .Net and C++ is not necessary the language to address all the .Net objects in its classical reference

3. REPORTS.DIC. In most of the cases you will relay on RW reports: SOP blank invoice form, for instance. Good implementation practice recommends you to place Reports.dic to the network, so all the GP workstations pick it from the same place. You may pose the question, why do we really care about these legacy RW reports – the answer is simple – because GP allows you to print RW SOP invoice form from SOP Invoice or batch windows directly

4. Dexterity customization and programming. Of course Dex programming and software development should be trusted to Dexterity programmer or GP customization partner. The pool of GP source code programmers is really limited and we find these folks in mostly Philippines. Sometimes we hear arguments from GP customization partners in India, however I would have to question their expertise
