Furnishing Your Outdoor Getaway
August 29, 2008
If you are fortunate enough to live in a location in North America which receives a lot of sun year round, no doubt you have turned patio living into a lifestyle. Arizona, Nevada, and even some areas of Canada enjoy so many rain free days each year that citizens literally live their lives in the outdoors, and it looks as though they were spending some time in the living room.
Now you may not be fortunate enough to live in a location where little rainfall is a guarantee, but that doesnt mean you cant create your own living room right outside and enjoy it all summer long. Here are a few ideas for furnishing your patio and making it into the perfect recreation area.
A covered deck or patio is perfect
Even if you do live in an area where you expect a moderate or even high amount of rain in the summer time, you can live outdoors as long as you have a nice cover over your outdoor living space. Many houses have roofs which extend over porches and patios, so you dont have to worry about the furniture getting wet.
Wicker and rattan are always in style
One of the great things about patio living is that the décor just doesnt seem to get old. The smell, look, and feel of wicker furniture for the patio is just as appealing today as it was 30 years ago. Whats better is that there are even more options than there used to be; chair and table sets with cushions and pillows are fairly inexpensive and can be found almost everywhere.
If you do want to modernize the look of your deck or patio, you also have plenty of options. Try looking at tables with metal frames, around a glass base. Chairs and other furniture can be metal or plastic as well, although you need to be sure to dry off metal furniture that gets wet as it may cause rust to build up on the surface of your deck.
Add some unique pieces of furniture
You can really make your guests do a double take, and maybe even get in a minor skirmish, if you include some original pieces of furniture. One of my personal favorites are hanging basket chairs, suspended from the ceiling. These are ultra comfortable as they allow a person to sink right in and read a favorite book or take a quick cat nap.
Other great furniture additions to patio and decks include porch swings. Again, these can either be suspended from the roof or they can be supported by a frame. You might even want to try a hammock slung between the railings.
Dont forget the appliances and electronics!
Of course if you really want to live in style outside, you want to have easy access to food and entertainment. There are several barbecue models sold today that include ice chests, perfect for keeping snacks and drinks; no one is stopping you from putting a mini fridge out there either.
And of course for the finishing touch, why not bring out a television set or even a full entertainment center? Theres nothing quite so romantic as taking in a movie in the warm summer heat while the night falls around you, and even on your own I guarantee it will be more fun than watching inside!
