There are several types of decks that you can consider. One of the most attractive and simple is a step deck, where half the hot tub is surrounded by a deck that comes up to the lip of the tub and the other half has steps cut into it, giving you a good way to comfortably get into the tub itself. This is an attractive option, especially if you intend to do some landscaping nearby. With a little bit of work into this design you can create your own garden grotto, surrounded by beautiful flowers and ferns. Another thing to consider is what wood should you use. Redwood decks are very popular and can give you a wonderfully harmonious look in general.
Consider what you want the footing to be. Because the tub needs to be supported by more than just the deck (that water is heavy!) you will probably need to lay down concrete pillars or pier blocks to build on. When considering posts, you will need vertical supports for the deck and one commonly suggested material for this is Construction Heart, due to its resistance to decay.
The best time to considering building a deck for a hot tub is before the hot tub is installed. Hot tubs weigh about a ton and a half when filled, so make sure you know exactly where it is going and what will be needed to support it! Before you start you might want to check out your local building codes. Because decks for hot tubs tend to be freestanding, you will probably not need a building permit, but you cant be too careful. This is also a good time to make sure you know where the waterlines and gas lines near your house are, to prevent any accidents.
When considering a hot tub, dont cheat yourself out of the option to completely redo your yard to match it! This is a wonderful opportunity to get the back yard that you really want!
